Charcoal production
Modern technology of charcoal production resides in process of wood pyrolysis. Wood pyrolysis is the process of wood thermal decomposition by limited, or full oxygen-eliminating
Process of wood thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) is caused by wood warming-up in gaseous atmosphere with limited oxygen-eliminating and is carried out, usually, in the closed vessel (retort), which is warmed -up through vessel walls. There is branch pipe for taking out gases, which appear during the charcoal production., then these gases are condensed and combusted
Charcoal production process can be conventional divided on three stages:
1. Drying (It passes in temperature conditions from 0 till 150 C)- wet exudes from wood at this stage
2. Pyrolysis (It passes in temperature conditions from 150 till 350 C). Some organic substances, which pull into wood, destroy at this stage. Organic resin and pyrolysis gas appear in the consequence of destruction
3. The stage of heat treatment (Usually, it passes in temperature conditions from 350 till 500 C). Separation from coal, organic resins and non-condensable gases, which appeared at previous stage, characterize this stage
Such products appear in consequence of pyrolysis (in % from the weight of air-dried wood):
- charcoal near 30 %;
- wood gas near 20 %;
- distillate near 50 %
